50 Most Influential DC Restaurants of the Last Century!

50 Most Influential DC Restaurants of the Last Century

Washingtonian Magazine September 2020

Ann Limpert writes:

"This Baileys Crossroads dining room was one of the first restaurants in the suburbs to offer an affordable menu and a date-night atmosphere (servers in silk dresses, a Trumpian amount of gilt). It went beyond Americanized Thai staples, and its success helped spur the Thai-restaurant boom in the 1990s".

Thank you Washingtonian Magazine, Ann Limpert, our loyal patrons and dedicated staff for supporting us for over 3 decades, through thick & thin!  What an honor it is to be named amongst DC's esteemed institutions!

SCAM ALERT: DUANGRAT'S DOES NOT PARTICIPATE W/ UBER EATS

Dear patrons,

It has been brought to our attention that Duangrat's is listed on the Uber Eats platform.  For the record, Duangrat's has never partnered with Uber Eats- this is a fraudulent/ unauthorized listing!  For your convenience, our delivery service is powered by Grub Hub

The Best Thai Restaurants DMV

D.C.’s Thai scene continues to grow, with restaurants experimenting with lesser-known regional dishes and opening scene-y restaurants that offer the entire package, including festive decor and killer cocktails. Here are some of the most standout examples of Thai fare around town.
By Missy Frederick

Duangrat's

"Located off bustling Route 7 between Baileys Crossroads and Seven Corners, specializes in Thai street food. It’s one of the oldest in the area. There’s an extensive collection of appetizers and salads, and seafood aplenty, whether it be cod spiked with mango or an entire fried rockfish. The upstairs was recently rebranded as One Night in Bangkok, specializing in Thai street food".

Finally, get Duangrat's delivered via Grub Hub!

Finally, get Duangrat's delivered!

One of the keys to Duangrat's longevity is that we are decidedly "old school" and believe in the adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"!  But don't get us wrong; we do continually strive to maintain, improve and add value for our customers.

After long and careful consideration, we have decided to partner with Grub Hub, a third-party delivery service.  We chose Grub Hub as it is also a pioneer in its industry.  Started in 2004, it was the first online delivery service of its kind and is very well established.

Furthermore, Grub Hub is the only restaurant delivery service that is partnered with Amazon Prime, which means that if you are an Amazon Prime member, you also get Grub Hub+ free for a year (an enhanced service tier that is otherwise a paid membership).

If you are an Amazon Prime member, click here for more info and to link Grub Hub+ service:  https://www.amazon.com/prime/offer/grubhub/prime-deal

Note that anyone can use Grub Hub, even if you are not an Amazon Prime member.  Simply click on the DELIVERY tab above and you will be prompted to register with Grub Hub if you are a first-time user, to complete your order.

For the sake of transparency, Grub Hub does charge a fee for the convenience of its delivery service.  There is also a modest mark-up of the menu price (~10%) to partially offset the commission Grub Hub charges the restaurant.

To start your delivery online, click on the top right DELIVERY tab or if using your phone, scan this QR code:

COMING SOON EARLY AUGUST 2023!

After an extraordinary 40+ year run of our beloved Duangrat’s Market and Rabieng Restaurant around the corner, the Duangrat family has decided to consolidate those two businesses into one unified, streamlined concept that pays homage to the best of both.  With the closing of one chapter, begins the next ….

As a Generation X’er, the 80’s were my formative years as a young adult.  One of my fondest adolescent memories was a high school graduation trip to my parents’ hometown of Bangkok, Thailand.  Fast forward to present day; this trip in the Summer of ’89 serves as the inspiration and theme of my newest concept.

Summertime, soft-shells and other seafood musings!

Hi friends!  It's Summertime finally (did we have a Spring?!) and that means it's soft-shell crab season.  Soft crabs are not their own breed, they're simply blue crabs caught in transition- when the crab has outgrown and shed its exoskeleton, but before its newly formed shell becomes hard again.

For the 30 years we've been in business, we've sourced our soft crabs from the same local, family-owned supplier in Easton, MD- Baxter Soft Crabs.  The Baxter family is the best source for soft crabs in the mid-Atlantic, it is exclusively their bread & butter!  Thanks to our decades long relationship, we get the season's first catch and cream of the crop!

We serve our "jumbo" soft crabs battered with Japanese Panko bread crumbs, served hot & crisp and topped with your choice of one signature sauce:  Chili Basil, Bhram peanut curry, Five-Spice, Sweet & Sour.  Soft crab season starts when it's warm in May and tapers off in September, so come and get 'em!

On the topic of seafood, Duangrat's does not bill itself as a seafood restaurant, but we serve plenty of it!  Duangrat's procures white domestic wild caught shrimp, seasonal soft crabs, live whole Maine lobsters, sea scallop, and a diverse portfolio of quality fish:  wild king salmon, red snapper, rainbow trout, Chilean sea bass, rockfish, flounder, cod.  We procure our seafood fresh when possible, at least 3 times a week from only two boutique seafood suppliers based in Maryland's Eastern shore- not a big box restaurant supply wholesaler.

Coming soon…a very limited supply of Rogue Sriracha Stout!!!

Contrary to popular belief, Sriracha sauce was not an invention or brand coined by its California based producer, Huy Fong.   While the brand Sriracha has become generically used like Coke and Tabasco, and its red plastic squeeze bottle & green cap iconic- the true origin of this sauce is Thailand.  That's right, Sriracha hot sauce was invented in the town of Sriracha, Thailand by the Panich family.  Unfortunately, the family missed the boat and did not capitalize on global distribution and trademarking like Huy Fong.

Rogue Brewery, out of Oregon, known for its prolific limited production craft beer has hit a home run in its unlikely collaboration with the Huy Fong Sriracha sauce factory.  The stout is very drinkable (5.7% ABV) with just a bit of zesty kick in the aftertaste.

Supply is very limited, in fact we were only allocated one case, so this unique brew doesn't come cheap at $25 per 750 ml bottle!  Should you order one?  Sriracha + beer, why wouldn't you?  A second, maybe not.  But at least you'll have a nifty souvenir bottle and conversation starter to share with friends!

No one ever said chasing spicy Thai food with spicy Thai inspired beer was a bright idea- but you only live once!

The original Thai version, produced in the beach town of Sriracha, just outside of Bangkok, Thailand:

SRIRACHA + BEER = HECK YEAH!!!

Featured in Arlington Magazine Jan/Feb 2015 issue: "12 Local Restaurants That Have Stood the Test of Time"

Hello friends!  Check out our latest write-up in the current issue of Arlington Magazine.  Food writer Jessica Strelitz profiles 12 local time-tested restaurants that have become beloved dining institutions.  Duangrat's Thai Restaurant was established by Ed & Pookie Duangrat in 1987 and has been managed by second generation owner/ operator Eddie Duangrat since 1997.

The key to our longevity and success is that our restaurant is first and foremost, a "labor of love".  Read more here:  http://www.arlingtonmagazine.com/January-February-2015/Family-Restaurants-Arlington-Falls-Church-McLean/

"Food Fit For a King"

Thailand is the longest reigning Monarchy in the World!  The expression "Food Fit for a King" might very well have been coined in old Siam.  Today the vast majority of Thai restaurants, especially outside of the homeland, serve "common" Thai cuisine.  This is not so much due to any sort of social caste system, but because the depth of knowledge of classic and royal Thai cuisine has long been lost amongst the youth of today's modern Thai restaurants.

Duangrat's has been serving the DC Metro since 1987 and is the area's longest operating Thai restaurant.  Duangrat's is proud to remain classic and traditional- this is a dying breed in today's restaurant scene.

Duangrat's takes the expression of this blog title literally.  We are proud to be the official Thai cuisine caterer of the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington D.C.  We are also the only Thai restaurant in the DC Metro area entrusted to prepare "royal" style Thai dishes for visiting members of the Royal Thai family.  This month, the Thai Embassy contracted Duangrat's to provide over 5,000 finger hors d'oeuvres for guests at its Thai National Day gala at The Willard Intercontinental Hotel.

At Duangrat's, you don't have to be be royalty to eat like one.  Enjoy Thai cuisine made by those who make "Food Fit for a King"…

Duangrat's Crisp Duck Basil is here!

New on Duangrat's menu, Crisp Duck Basil, yummy!  What took us so long?  We take our recipe development seriously, experimenting and tweaking with ingredients and techniques until perfection.

Our preparation begins with braising a whole duck so that our marinade is infused with the skin, while retaining moisture.  It's perfectly browned!

We braise our ducks first!
Once braised, our duck is sliced thin, dusted & flash-fried, then wok-tossed with a light coating of our signature chili-basil sauce.  PERFECTION on a plate!

"Chalk Board Specials"

Duangrat's is excited to introduce rotating, small batch specials.  Limited run dishes that are good 'til they're gone!

The dishes will range from adaptations of simple, comfort foods our chefs & proprietors enjoy at home to more complex, time consuming preparations that we are not able to offer on a regular basis.

There are so many delicious snacks & dishes in the Thai culinary repertoire that we have held out on, but have always wanted to share with you.  We simply did not want to commit to them on paper due to scarcity of ingredients, resources, inability to keep up supply with demand…

Our solution?  An old school chalkboard!  We'll write what we have to offer, and erase when we don't. Simple as that!

Without further adieu, on tonight's chalk board:

Shrimp Chips w/ Coconut Dip $5
Puffed shrimp enriched rice chips served with house made coconut pork dip (contains peanuts).  An unusually delicious local snack!

Five Spice Pork Belly Noodle Soup $13
Tender pork, crisp pork belly, curled rice noodles, boiled egg, tofu & sprouts in rich, savory star-anise broth.

Fat Tire Amber Ale (12oz.) $5
5.2 ABV  Our supplier goofed up and we ended up with a random case of 12oz. Fat Tire (we usually sell the 22oz. bottles).  Help us kick the case!

Make your own Pad Thai!

Two servings:
(loose measurements, adjust to taste)
4 tablespoons oil (vegetable)
1 teaspoon garlic- finely chopped
1 tablespoon preserved turnip- chopped
1 tablespoon firm tofu- diced
(1 tablespoon dried shrimp)
10-12 medium shrimp, peeled & deveined or 1 chicken breast sliced medium thin
4 cups of rice noodles
2 cups of water
2 tablespoon roasted peanuts- ground
4 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons rice vinegar
3 tablespoons fish sauce
1 tablespoon paprika
2 eggs
1 cup fresh bean sprouts
1 stalk scallions- julienned
lime wedges

* specialty items:  fish sauce, preserved turnip, firm tofu and rice noodles can be purchased at Duangrat’s Oriental Food Mart:  5878 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22041

1.     Heat a large pot of water until it begins to vaporize, cut heat.  Soak 4 cups of dehydrated rice noodles until color turns from translucent to white, texture turns from brittle to soft, but firm (apprx. 10 minutes.)  Remove from water, drain, set aside.

2.    In a wok or large skillet, heat oil on high heat and quickly stir-fry protein, garlic, preserved turnip, firm tofu (and dried shrimp).

Stir-fry until protein begins to brown.

3.     Add 2 cups of water, allow to boil and protein to fully cook.  Add the pre-soaked noodles and continue to stir-fry until soft & moist (if dry/ sticky- add a little more water).

4.     Add bean sprouts crushed peanuts, sugar, vinegar, fish sauce and paprika and stir-fry, mixing ingredients thoroughly.  Once noodles lightly brown, slight char & smokiness achieved- cut off heat.

5.     Scrape noodles to one side of the pan w/ spatula; break-in eggs on the empty side and beat w/ spatula tip to mix yolk & egg white.  Allow egg to cook (forming a thin sheet).  Quickly scoop the noodles over top of the egg sheet.

6.     Use spatula to scoop from under egg sheet and flip noodles over.  Remove pan from heat and place noodles on serving plate.  Suggested garnishes:  crushed peanuts, lime wedges, raw bean sprouts, and scallions.

Post Cards from Thailand, Fall 2013

It's been 10 years since I last visited the homeland!  Bangkok has always been ahead of it's time and it seems that each new construction is bigger and better than the last.  I often think of Bangkok as the Dubai of Southeast Asia.  Despite the rapid modernization and technology boom, the country is very much deeply rooted in ancient history and tradition; one can still find things made "the old fashioned way".  The infrastructure however, has yet to catch up.  In Bangkok, you'll find a luxury skyscraper next to a ramshackle.  Thailand can best be described as a dichotomy of the old and new.   So while Thailand has changed in many ways over the last decade, it still retains its old world charm...

The highlight of my trip (other than eating Thai food) was touring ancient Buddhist temples and Royal palaces (there are many).  My most remarkable memory is of "The Temple of Emerald Buddha and The Grand Palace".  These two separate entities share the same grounds.  Each is comprised of a series of massive buildings and structures, spanning over 200 acres smack in the middle of Bangkok.  This prime real estate makes the Grand Palace the priciest in the World, befitting His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the longest reigning monarch in the World!

Both the Temple and Palace are amazing feats of classic Thai architecture, design, and construction.  Each structure is "over-the-top" grandiose and painstakingly ornate.  It is such a breathtaking sight to behold!  As I walked through the hallowed grounds, I was reminded that over 25 years ago, Duangrat's was designed and built as an homage to Thailand;  capturing its timeless beauty with hand painted artwork & murals, intricate woodwork & detailed furnishings in every nook and cranny of the restaurant.

Duangrat's is a truly one-of-kind gem.  It is classy and classic.

Duangrat's is the most awarded and longest operating Thai restaurant in the D.C. Metro area.  Call me biased, but I really can't think of any other Thai restaurant that evokes the feeling of actually being in Thailand and eating authentic Thai cuisine!
